Juno, Knocked Up, Waitress...all big movies out this year dealing with an unplanned pregnancy. Even though Juno is being hailed by some as a feminist movie for its portrayal of the title character, she chooses to carry her pregnancy to term. So do the women in the other two movies. This, of course, is seized upon by pro-life forces as a win for their side.
Conservatives are constantly blasting Hollywood as a bastion of liberalism corrupting the morals of American children. But think--when was the last time there was a mainstream Hollywood movie in which a character had an abortion and didn't suffer ostracism, terrible health consequences or soul-searing regret? Think hard. Coming up blank? It was the teen-'sploitation comedy
Fast Times At Ridgemont High, in 1982. Yup, 25 years ago.
So what's going on? Are the major studios just that afraid of social conservatives and their big mouths? Does a cute baby at the end just make for a better movie than a woman getting on with her life? Is there anything we can do to encourage Hollywood to make more pro-choice films, especially ones where it's treated matter-of-factly and not as a political screed? Please discuss.
