As much as we all get a little skeptical of Lifetime programs, something interesting caught my eye. I was watching The '60s when an ad came up for a mini-series called "Human Trafficking;" it's supposed to be a program based on the kidnapping and transportation of young girls to brothels, where they are unwillingly trafficked ( Read more... )

If you take the alcohol example, what message does legalisation send to the public as a whole.

Most people think that drinking alcohol (as a legal adult, and this of course changes depending where you live) is harmless. It is frowned upon by various conservative, often religious groups, and this increases the general populations view that these conservative groups are out of touch.

Due to the fact that it is seen as being harmless, a huge proportion of the population drink before they are of legal age. Fake ID's, unobservant door staff, parents who are "cool" all help. There is also the pressure from peers to drink before you are of age.

Not that I think prohibition is an answer, hell no. But it is something I have thought about when chatting to friends regarding the legalisation of other drugs (which, like alcohol my friends and I enjoy and use responsibly).

There is some merit to system which doesn’t legalise, but treats the issue as social rather criminal.

I don't know if that actually gets across what I'm thinking. I don't like the idea of a world where people to consider getting a hair cut and getting a blow job simply a transaction of money for service. You can’t ignore the fact that in the world we live in, woman are often treated very badly by the sex industry. So torn by this issue….

I'd say a lot of that is due to the criminalization of prostitution.

If it weren't illegal, women could go to the police when being abused, mistreated, or taken advantage of without fear of going to jail for being a prostitute.
