Tonight in the U.S., Commander in Chief premiered on television, portraying a woman as President. If any of you watched it [although so far it has only been aired in the Eastern time zone of the U.S.], I encourage you to post your reactions. Several issues were raised that could inspire discussion, and I would be very interested in others' thoughts. I'd rather it not be a forum for attacking other's responses, but more of a dialogue about how and whether the show itself embodied feminist issues, portrayed and furthered stereotypes, the implications the show might have on altering or reinforcing viewer's perspectives of females in leadership roles, etc. I am not aware whether the show will be broadcast in other nations, but I think any person in this community might have an opinion to contribute.

My immediate reactions [although they are admitedly biased due to being trigger and gut reactions typed while simultaneously watching the show] can be found in my personal journal.

Overall, I was impressed that while Geena Davis' character is an independent politically, the premiere did show some reactions from members of both major American political parties. I think this was a good policy so as not to alienate potential viewers. Additionally, I thought it did a great job of showcasing sitations that could hypothetically occur in real life. I'm glad it showed unlikely characters as supporting or opposing her, so it couldn't face much criticim for embracing stereotypes. Like any television show, I was disappointed in a few aspects, and applauding others. Also like any other television show, there's no telling whether Commander in Chief will sink or swim, float under the radar or become the talk of the town, inspire debate and change, or simply be just another television show, but I for one am excited to watch.
