This is just ... perfect. I have no words better to describe it but that. It gave me an ache almost like what you described for Monica/Susan herself. Beautiful writing. Thank you.
Thank you. I started writing this story before DH came out and it was just meant to be a focus on Hermione growing up through her mother's eyes. After reading about the sacrifice Hermione made in DH to keep her family safe, though, I wanted to look more at life as Monica Wilkins.
I really like how you show Monica's growing sense that something is wrong and missing in her life, and the way both halves of the story tie back into Hermione.
Nice one -- I always did wonder about Hermione's relationship with her parents, and I'm glad someone else agrees that being friends with Harry and Ron was crucial to Hermione loosening up. :) This was well written and very plausible.
(A few things slightly 'off' for a British context, btw -- e.g. dentists aren't called 'Dr'. Just a quibble.)
That's true, but I have to say it didn't jump out for me. I just read it as though she had PhD ... brain truly warped by David Lodge's novels, I suppose.
Erm , they're not really called anything special, actually -- just Mr/Mrs/Miss/Ms according to gender etc. So Hermione's mum would just be 'Susan Granger' or 'Mrs Susan Granger' on the plaque outside their premises, with initials after her name to show which dental qualifications she had. The only dentist I can remember meeting who called himself 'Dr' was Canadian.

I didn't know that about dentists in England. Thanks for the Britpick! What are they called?
