Greatest concert experience ever. Even with all the rain & standing for about 12 hours, it was worth it. There was so much love, & respect. Sept 18, 2004 will stay with me forever.

First, I found out about the Block Party on okayplayer.com (july or august 2004). At the time they were just mainly promoting Dave featuring The Roots & Erykah Badu & maybe Lauryn Hill. I had to sign up on this site that gives out free tixs to performances for Jimmy Kimmel, Carson Daly etc. There was no guarantee that I was gonna get to go. They had all these conditions and shit. They had a secret location etc, and how u had to be there like 10am and the show wasn't until like 6pm. Then like a week before the event I rec'd an email saying that I was accepted with 3 passes (I think the maximum was 4). They also had this stupid rule that if you didn't use all your passes then you couldn't attend. Well, one of friends backed out the morning of the event. Then my niece only made it to 34th street (coming from Queens) because it was raining so hard that the F train's track had flooded. She wouldn't take a cab to the meet-up point (under the manhattan bridge in downtown manhattan) because she couldn't justify paying for a cab for a free concert(she felt so stupid later).

To be continued when I return later.....

Kanye opened, he was really good. Then I think it was Dead Prez next, some of their material made some people go "What"??? Dave was funny as hell. He had a comical rap battle with an audiance member. There's so much that happened. Erykah snatching her wig off was something else. I almost lost my mind when Big Daddy Kane & Cool G Rap came out to perform with the Root's. Black Thought's(he could most def. get it) jacket with Kane on the back was off the hook (I'm old). Seeing Jill & Erykah singing "You Got Me" with the Roots gave me goosebumps.

Damn, I lost track of time. I gotta go get my hair done. I'll be back with more.

Thank you soooo much for sharing! I'm so jealous!

The movie was good. I just got back from seeing it. Some of Dead Prez' material had me saying WTF?, too...lol. Everything else you described looked dope from how the movie portrayed it. I love Big Daddy Kane, but I was so mad he came out in the Cross Colours throwback-looking shirt...lol. Lauryn looked beautiful! How crazy was the crowd when the Fugees came out?
