Well, it’s official. I start I.T.T. December 9th and I will graduate with a Bachelors of Science; Criminal Science.  I don’t mind telling you that I feel both excited and apprehensive about going back to school. This will be a career change for me. Not a subtle one, it won’t be a lateral change. It’s a brand new career! Did I mention I still have sticker shock?

One of the things that kept me from going to school in the past was the money it took to go to school. For me it doesn’t make sense to go to school to get out of debt by putting yourself further into to debt. However, with the economy being the way it is. The small fry jobs like customer service and technical support are being outsourced overseas or to companies here in the states that can promise the same result with a smaller price tag by contracting out the work. I’m not against contractors, I am one. Some how people have got it in their minds that since you work at home you don’t need much and your bills are magically reduced or suddenly disappear. So, they pay less and again you’re doing more to get what little they give you. I’m not saying that this career change will solve all that. Though, I will admit that having a degree under my belt will create some new opportunities that are currently out of reach.

I really respect people that have had the opportunity to go to college and honored the commitment. What I don’t respect is someone telling me that I’m not qualified for a job that I’ve been doing successfully for the last 13 years simply because, I don’t have a four year degree. Certifications I can understand, not a degree. Certifications are unique, specific to your trade. Where as a degree is more of a general education of your interest. They set the foundation which agreeably, is equally important. Though similar they are different.  I don’t like it to be implied that those that have an Associates or Bachelor degree are more deserving then I. The Department of Human Resource has a tight hold on a lot of companies. Enforcing the education requirement which use to be preferred but not required. Experience use to be equal to education. Currently, that’s no longer the case.

So, those that are skilled but have no formal education and struggling financially because, corporate America is restructuring have to find a way, not to mention the time, to better themselves so they may improve upon their quality of life. I’ve come to believe that this society that I live in relies on debt. I think it’s become paramount to those that control the financial market. It benefits them MORE to keep us in debt than to offer a helping hand.

With that said I’ve come to accept a few things. I will always have a car payment. I like new cars. Just the way I am. On that same line of thought given how our society runs I feel the same logic should apply to my education. Meaning, I am always going to be in debt and since I am always going to be digging a hole I might as well take some pride in it. I’m going to enjoy the fruits of my labor. Perhaps, I will get lucky and dig my way to China and meet myself on the other side!
