Dropping the Bomb for solarsentinel

Lana pushed the end button on her cell. It had taken her a few hours, but she finally called Clark. She needed someone to talk to before Dean and Sam got there the next day. Chloe was in Star City, Pete was God knows where...so Clark was the only one left. She wasn't exactly sure how he was going to react to the news, but she knew he still cared ( Read more... )

No, he won't. Clark was in Metropolis when Lana called, talking to the police department's press official about the week in crime for the police notes section he's been running for three weeks, but he's currently making his way back to Smallville. He doesn't even stop at his own house, merely bypasses it in favor of the next property over. He doesn't know what's happened, but after picking up the stress in her voice, he's kind of prepared for anything. He thinks.

"Lana?" Boyscout calling.

"Door's open."

She really doesn't feel like getting up right now.

Clark steps inside, closing the door extra carefully behind him and eyes Lana. "I'm here. What do you need?"

She swallows a little, trying to organize her thoughts and calm herself enough to get this out. It's going to be just as hard to tell him as it was to tell Dean.

"You might want to sit first."

Yeah, that's going to calm him down completely. Or, you know, the opposite. Clark glances around and opts to sit in the chair nearest her, expression focused and waiting. Even so, it takes him a few seconds before he clears his throat.

"Whatever it is, I'm here. Okay?"

She nods and looks down, taking a few seconds to gather the strength she needed to just come out and say it.

"I'm pregnant."

It's not until the words leave her lips that she's saddened by the fact that it's not his. It's not even a question that's going to come up, though considering she hasn't had anyone in her life for almost a year, there's going to be questions, and lots of them. It's not something she'll voice, though. They'd had that discussion already; nothing would ever work out between them and that was that.

There are a plethora of possibilities that run through Clark's head in the brief time she takes to orient herself. Something happened to Nell, she's contracted some horrible disease, they're going to take the Lang estate away, and a host of others that flash almost instantaneously through his mind.

This is not one of them. "What?" He blinks and waits three seconds. "You're pregnant."

After almost a minute, he remembers to let out a breath. "How can I help?" Don't worry, Lana, he'll have the freak out eventually but Clark is still in protection mode.

Somehow she'd expected something different. Maybe a 'who's the father?' or a disapproving look because she'd obviously done something that wasn't exactly the most moral or the most intelligent. But then this was Clark and she was Lana and it was thoroughly un-Lana like for her to do something like that, therefore something was wrong to begin with. Of course he'd want to help.

Lana bites her lip, her voice coming out soft and shaky. "Just hold me. Please..."

That's fairly simple. He moves off of his chair and sits next to her, opening arms so she can settle inside of them. "Of course." He's still mentally reeling over those two words, but he is so accustomed to focusing on other people that it's as natural as breathing now. Eventually, however, quite possibly during a sniffling or crying fit, he will utter the words Lana expected originally.

"Do you know who the father is?" Name, rank, and address will work just fine. Clark plans to have Words with the guy.

There was a crying fit along with the clinging to him, because she's a very scared woman right now.

And now there was a sniffle. "His name is Dean. Winchester, I think. He, um...he passed through here a few weeks ago."

She can cling for as long as she needs to, though Clark is only marginally better with crying women now than he used to be. He might even squeeze her gently, so she knows she isn't alone in this.

"Dean Winchester." Okay, that name isn't being forgotten, like, ever. "Do you want me to track him down?"

She just shakes her head. "No, I already called him. He and his brother should be here tomorrow."

And now Clark is getting around to the realization that Lana had what sounds like a one-night stand and ended up pregnant. Somehow, he's reasonably sure there's a moral in there somewhere. This doesn't invalidate any lectures he may decide to give on the subject when she doesn't look scared to death.

"Want me to be there?"

Hint: He's really hoping she says 'Yes'.

She pulls away, actually laughing a little. "Clark, the man was decent enough to drop everything just to be here. I think threatening looks from the ex next door would be a little off-putting."

Not that she expected Dean to be intimidated by an extra large farmboy. Sam was about the same size, after all, not to mention the kind of job they had.

How about an extra large farmboy with superstrength, speed, breath, heat vision and some other stuff? Clark's face falls briefly, apparently he's been looking forward to looming and possible other things. He sighs, nodding, and adjusts his position so he's not squishing her.

"Friend next door, even if he happens to be an ex." There are a few minutes of silence while he absorbs the implications of all of this. Then, with a small smile, "I should go buy Fordman's out of plaid baby blankets."

That gets an eyebrow raised in his direction. "In that case, I'm hoping for a boy." Because no little girl of Lana Lang's is going to have a plaid baby blanket.
