It's not often that I get caught up in strange eccentricities of the law.

Further to the 'birth certificate with no parents' post earlier: apparently, this is not unusual, and is completely fine - your birth is still registered correctly and you can order a full birth certificate, they just don't always issue one at the time.

However, it turns out that, unbeknownst to anyone, I am illegitimate.

A recap: I was born, and 6 months later my parents got married. This means that when my birth was registered, I was registered as an illegitimate child due to being born outside of wedlock. What was not made evident was that you don't automatically change status to legitimate upon your parents getting married. Instead, they have a legal obligation to fill our a form to reregister your birth, now as a legitimate child. My parents were not aware of this, it never came up, and so they never did it.

The amusing fall out of this is that there is now a form which they have to fill in to get my birth registered anew at age (nearly) 24. Also, that my dad never had any parental responsibility for me, so it was very nice of him to contribute so substantively to my raising! And I can't inherit their kingdom or something, despite being the eldest child. I'm sure that they're just waiting to tell me where that is.

Though I am tempted to hold a 'not a bastard!' party when this all gets straightened out, now.
