History: Riku was born and raised in New Sanctum for most of his years. His parents were often not at home, away at work or important 'business opportunities', as such, he grew up without feeling much of his parents' love for him, but he knew somehow they cared. Raised by his attendants, his first friend was Sora, a neighbour he met when they started to glare at each other through the windows. Eventually this grew into a close friendly-rivalry relationship, with them always hanging out with each other to defeat the other in sword-fighting, classes, and almost everything. Riku rarely and almost never lost; he had constant practise since he was able to manage well in everything he did in many eyes. Gradually, he got bored, but then a new girl, by the name of Kairi, stepped into their lives. It changed the duo, and they eventually became a trio as four years passed by quickly. However, Riku could feel Sora was slightly distant from him from before, though he didn't mention it much.
However, when Sora turned fourteen, Riku revealed the fact that he had chosen the darkness and the demons called the 'heartless', over the friendship they had. The power they had lured him, and soon enough he fell deep to other worlds, and hiding in the shadows of New Sanctum, occasionally fighting Sora as he opposed Riku's plans and moving around various worlds with a reason no one knew except himself. Eventually, as Sora became a better fighter with his friends and his keyblade, Riku was defeated. Locked behind the Door of Darkness, Riku wandered a solitary journey until he met a little friend whom joined up with him for a while. Riku does know the way home; however, feeling remorseful for having betrayed Sora's friendship, Riku chose not to go home to New Sanctum, and wandered about in the deep abyss of darkness. He knows that Sora is looking for him, but is choosing to avoid confrontation with Sora, silently afraid of what might happen if they met again. Riku and his new friend wandered much, before they found a way to travel the worlds, and they split as Riku wanted to find Sora again and apologise for everything.
During his wanderings, Riku chanced upon a castle, in which his friend, Sora, was asleep for half a year, after saving the world from Riku and the heartless. Riku entered this Castle, known as Castle Oblivion, and began climbing up stairs of his past to see those who were part of the heartless taunting him, to give in and give up hope of being friends with anyone again. He fought a long and hard battle, with a wandering friend for support, before reaching the top, where he found a sleeping Sora. Later told by a young girl,Namine, whom reminded him much of Kairi, about everything that had happened between Sora and Namine in the castle, Riku decided to wait and help those who were trying to reconstruct Sora's memories. Riku decided to continue on a journey to defeat his inner darkness; the side which had possessed him to join the darkness at the start of his life.
Riku wasn't done yet. During the time he was patiently waiting for Sora to wake up, he was ordered to take down and bring in a young boy, by the name of Roxas. He eventually found out that Roxas was Sora's Nobody, and if the two were reunited it might be possible for Sora to regain his memories faster and wake up. Taking him out, Riku took Roxas back to DiZ, the man who had now joined Namine in taking care of the reconstruction of Sora's memories. Though Riku didn't like DiZ on his rough methods, he did anything he was told, as he felt he had to do all he could to protect and wake Sora.
Just as the reconstruction was to be done, someone stumbled upon the sleeping Sora, and in their desperation Sora was put back in New Sanctum with some artificial memories to believe that there were heartless were increasing and threatening the safety of the city. A side effect that came up was that Sora had to slowly regain his memories, much slower than Riku had expected. Riku found out about this and was quite upset, but there was nothing he could do then. Riku remembers all that has happened; he is the only one in the trio that still remembers everything intact. Though it is because of these memories that he has finally chosen to return to New Sanctum, and watch over the pair who are slowly regaining much of their missing memories. He will not choose to reveal the past to them, for he is afraid that they might reject him for all he has done to hurt them. Riku also knows that Roxas is wandering around New Sanctum; something DiZ told him to watch for while he was there.
When Riku comes back to New Sanctum, he'll end up watching Sora, Kairi and Roxas from afar. People from his childhood might recognise him for being a rich man's kid, but he'll try to avoid any talk with anyone that might recognise him so that he'll be able to slowly get the courage to face Sora and Kairi again. Riku will also discover that much has changed in his disappearance, so he'll try to get used to the streets, and returning to an empty home again.
Personality: Riku used to treat life as a very boring thing as a child until he met Sora. Part of him is still like that, so he looks constantly bored and uninterested in most things. The other side of him is not often seen by many except close friends and people whom he can trust; a part of him which he’ll do anything to protect his close friends, and show them his true self to be that of a caring and free young man. He often covers up by being harsh, and is rarely embarrassed or shocked; Sora’s been the only one who can make him feel all that. Riku’s a nice person within, it just takes time for that side to come out.
Riku basically is a force not to be reckoned. Sacrificing much of himself to awaken Sora from his sleep, he defeated Roxas hands down just for his sake. He is sometimes naïve when it comes to power, and his emotions are almost unpredictable. He often is sad though, seeing that all he has done resulted in the current situation with Kairi and Sora.
Powers/abilities/combat skills: He has the ability to manipulate darkness(not so proficient now, though), to form portals at will, and also has the keyblade known as ‘Way to the Dawn’.
Extra: Knows all about the demons and heartless
In Canon: Riku opened the door to the darkness on Destiny Islands. He fell into the darkness, and was possessed by Xehanort’s Heartless into doing dark deeds before he was stopped by Sora and left on the other side of the door of light. He travels with King Mickey as a close friend around the worlds and helps Sora indirectly in KH2.
