Electricity + World Cup= a happy union. What does this mean you ask? Well read on and its a very interesting story! This is a MUST read!!!
Okay so everyday the electricity gets cut off. About 5 times a day the electricity is off for about 15 minutes to 2 hours at a time (but its usually 1 hour). Since I have been here for now 8 months (I can't believe its been that long!) I have noticed that its getting worse and worse as time goes on. There are so many problems in Bangladesh I don't know where to begin! But anyways, the fact is that there are not enough power plants (and the power plants that are up and running are always breaking down!) to support the 140 million people! To save electricity and money the govnerments "solution" is to just turn off the electricity a bunch of times during the day and night! People are very angry here and some people have burned cars and houses of the government ministers who are involved with the decisions to turn the current off! Crazy! But the govn't is still doing cutting the current off! Jerks!
But these days the electricity has been on ALL day! And ALL night!!! Why would that be? It's because of WORLD CUP! The govn't ministers know that if the electricity goes off during a world cup football game, there would be riots in the streets and they would get targetted! So the govn't ministers have promised to not turn the current off for the whole month that football is being played! Isn't that crazy?!!!! But its really awesome! Because now we can watch a whole football game! And the electricity will be on all the time which means the fans will be on which means I won't sweat to death! So thank you World Cup for saving the day!
