“So I told her that I would share my new paints with her and now she wants me to come over to her house, Daddy! She said I could sleep there and everything!”
Clark leaned against the wall outside Lena’s door and listened to the conversation with a smile on his face.
“Well Lena, that’s something we’ll have to discuss when I get home. And I’ll definitely need to talk to Carly’s parents first. What if they live on a commune or only eat tofu? That’s no fun, right?” Clark concentrated his hearing until Lex sounded as if he were in the room with Lena, though Clark knew better. He also knew that certain little girls were supposed to be sleeping and certain overprotective fathers weren’t helping.
Clark quietly pushed the door open and made his way across the plush carpet to the lump on the canopy bed, bundled under a pink comforter.
“Is it tomorrow already where you are Daddy?”
“It sure is.”
“It’s still today here, I think. It was still today when Papa put me to bed.”
Taking that as a cue, Clark yanked back the comforter and arched his eyebrows at the angelic little face that turned towards him. “Uh-oh, busted,” she whispered into the phone she had absolutely not had when Clark had tucked her in and kissed her goodnight.
“Use your 'I didn’t do anything' face,” Lex suggested, an ocean away.
“I am Daddy; I don’t think it’s working,” Lena managed without the smile ever leaving her upturned face.
“Tell him it’s my fault then. And that he’s being a fuddy-duddy.”
Lena giggled as Clark leaned to speak into the phone for himself. “I heard that.”
Clark pushed down the blankets and climbed in beside Lena, hauling her back up to share the pillow, phone still clutched in her hand. “Five minutes,” he declared so both Luthors could hear him.
Lex cleared his throat and Clark could hear him moving around on his own bed to get more comfortable. “Well, that’s just enough time for me to tell you both about the day I had. Turns out that you can get a lot of insight into those weird phrases from the Harry Potter books we’ve been reading by spending an entire day in a British board meeting.”
Clark smiled at Lena who had already closed her eyes as Lex’s voice began to lull her to sleep. He snuggled closer to her and decided to do the same.

The bedroom was dark, with just the light of a few candles and the fire roaring across the room. Clark lay on his back on the luxurious bed with Lex cuddled into his chest. It was their first night alone together, with Lena staying at Carly’s house across town. Clark sighed as he lightly brushed a kiss across Lex’s scalp and settled in to doze for a while.
Lex’s voice was timid as he spoke into Clark’s chest, “What’s she doing right now?”
“The same thing she was doing five minutes ago, Lex; watching The Parent Trap and eating popcorn. She’ll be in a foul mood tomorrow, being up this late.”
“Are you sure she’s okay?”
“Yes, Lex. I can hear her breathing, her heartbeat and she knows to call out for me if something happens or she gets scared.”
Lex flopped over on his back beside Clark and sighed the sigh of the put-upon. “What was wrong with just inviting her friends over here? I mean, we are the cool parents, right? She should want to bring her friends over here so they can be impressed with how cool we are.”
Clark turned to lay his arm across Lex’s waist and bury his face in his neck. “I don’t think seven year olds get the whole ‘cool parents’ thing yet, Lex. Besides, isn’t it nice here, just you and me?”
“It can be just you and me with Lena down the hall too, Clark,” Lex sulked.
Smiling indulgently, Clark began to kiss and lick his way across Lex’s collarbone, intent on obliterating all fatherly thoughts from his mind. The plan seemed to be working until Clark felt Lex pushing at his shoulders, trying to worm out from underneath him.
“Hold that thought, Clark. I just need to check in with the security detail outside Carly’s house.”
**********
Lex had decided to spare his shoes, and stayed on the front porch with Martha, as Clark and Lena explored the farm. Never the outdoors type, he was content to sip coffee with his would-be mother-in-law as they discussed Lena’s upcoming ballet recital and the outfit Martha was working on.
“Daddy! Daddy!” Lex looked up to see Lena fly around the side of the house and had just enough time to put his coffee mug down before he had a lapful of dirty little girl.
“Yes, Miss Lena?”
She giggled as she wrapped her arms around his neck, “I want to take one of the cows home.”
“Hmm, I don’t really think that’s a good idea. Cows don’t generally make good house pets.”
Never one to be easily deterred, Lena pressed on. “But he could stay in the guest room beside mine. And we could make a door between them so I could visit him whenever I wanted!”
“No one is home during the day; wouldn’t he get lonely?”
Lena pondered that for a moment, not wanting her cow to be unhappy. “But nobody stays with the cows here during the day and they’re okay.”
Some days Lex felt having an intelligent child was not so much blessing as a curse. “How would we get the cow into the penthouse anyway? He’s much too big for the elevator.”
Lena’s face brightened suspiciously, as if she thought she had won. “Papa said he would fly him up to the balcony for me!”
Narrowing his eyes, Lex scanned the yard for the parental traitor. “He did, did he?”
Lena jumped off his lap and grabbed his hand, attempting to pull him out of the chair. “Come on, I already picked him out. His name is Daisy and he’s got a baby cow too!” As she dragged him off the porch and across the yard, Lex began thinking of the inventive uses of Kryptonite that were in Clark’s future. “Papa says he’s a girl, but he looks like a boy to me. I think he needs a bath ‘cause he smells funny and he’s chewing on something right now so we can’t feed him . . .”
