I'm finishing up translating Brokeback Mountain for uni and need some help.
"Jack said he was doing all right but he missed Ennis bad enough sometimes to make him whip babies."
I thought he meant he was close to crying but I can't find anything to support that in dictionaries etc. So what the hell does he mean? He gets so down he feels like beating his kids? Except he only has one and he's fifteen so hardly a baby. The urban dictionary gives some weird results but none that seem to fit.
Help?
