I'm translating Brokeback Mountain for class as some of you might know and there are a few phrases I'm not 100% about. Like this one:

Both Jack and Ennis claimed to be saving money for a small spread; in Ennis's case that meant a tobacco can with two five-dollar bills inside.

"...claimed to be saving money for a small spread" does she mean they're pretending they're there to make some "extra" money, when in fact they are actually broke and need to make ALL the money? [ETA. Or is she talking about land?]
