I thought it was bad yesterday but then when I woke up this morning I read the death toll (92 and counting, almost all of them teenagers 14-17 years old) and broke down all over again. It's just too damn horrible to be real ( Read more... )

I read your post and yes, you are absolutely right. I think for us it's a bit like America is made up of all these different states but together they identify as Americans. It's a little like that with us, the unity of the Northern countries, although we each have very strong patriotic feelings to our respective homes. We have so much history together, both good and bad, that we are practically one big family: some close, some less so, some bad blood, some rivalry, some hurt, a lot of cheap jokes and mocking, but above all a whole lot of love. When it matters we stand together. And when one is hurt we all are.

People are in shock here. Almost every single Icelander on my FB list has a Norwegian flag twibbon on the profile pic. Everywhere you go people are talking about it and, because we are so close, asking 'Have you heard from your friends/family/colleges? Is everyone okay?" No one is unaffected, we all have connections somewhere, of some kind, between the countries. Especially now when, because of the depression and rising unemployment, a great number of Icelanders have moved to Norway to find work.

It is us, it is home. And I'm having a real hard time dealing with it.

It's the same here and we also have a lot of peopel living and owrikng in sweden, hell they're right next door... peopel actually commute over the border everyday from both sides.

This thing is still so hard to understand but I'm also so proud of us all, for keeping our heads straight and fighting this with compassion, love, and kindness instead of hatred and violence.
