who thinks it was a particularly unfortunate decision to follow Bill Clinton's rousing speech with a musical interlude featuring Robert Palmer's Addicted to Love? What were they thinking?!

It wasn't the channel that was playing the song. It was in the convention hall! That's why I was so incredulous.

As you may have noticed from my previous post, I've been less than thrilled with network coverage of the convention, so I've been watching it on CNN dot Com.

They've got a couple of live feeds where they pretty much turn on the camera and mike, then go away until the convention's over for the night. The camera crew hangs around so you get to see reaction shots as well as the podium. As a result, I've been able to see all the things that the networks didn't broadcast, including several very good speeches. And sly musical selections.

I think that some of the television broadcasts might have picked it up, but they had pundits talking over it, so it wasn't as noticable.

This campaign has been using music very effectively, selecting songs that key into ideas they're trying to convey. For example, just about any time Joe Biden comes to the podium you'll hear something from Springsteen, playing up his blue collar background, reinforcing the "he's one of us" message.

When all the other musical cues have been so on-message, I have to wonder about this one. It seems unlikely that this one song was selected haphazardly.

If it was sanctioned by the DNC, and if the Clintons knew about it, they get points for being able to laugh at themselves and for trusting the sophistication of the delegates and voters. Either that, or they're hopelessly clueless, and some enterprising music director slipped in a subtle slap at President Clinton to satisfy a personal agenda.

I have been impressed with all the speeches! Everyone has been spot-on and the speeches are fulfilling their purpose(s). Everyone has been on their best behavior. I especially liked seeing the Obama daughters, on the same night Michelle Obama gave her speech, saying "hello" to their daddy on the big screen. It's wonderful to see political families with obvious love and caring for each other, with children who are respectful, authentic, and unselfconscious. We'll see what happens as they become teens, but I have confidence that they will grow into self-confident and well-spoken young women. Even if they grow up in the White House - may this be so!!

I especially liked the touch last night of having the "voices from America" speeches - the short stories of ordinary American citizens and how the eight years of Bush has affeced their lives. They got their point across, I think. I wonder how they found these particular people to speak. For the most part, they were great speakers, very poised in front of thousands of people and the TV cameras. I also wonder how tele-prompters work - all the speakers looked and sounded very natural, as though they were speaking without notes, not reading their speeches. I wish I had something like that when I do my chaplaincy work at the hospital. =-] But I guess you can't script those visits.

Have a great weekend. See you soon.
