The weirdest thing

At the beginning of the week I loaned my iff card to my son who used it with a weekly pass for the bus. Today he got on the bus and the driver took it off him saying it had been hotlisted and we had to go sort it out. Turns out the lady I talked to at the bus depot office had issued a new card to my name (with my address and old mobile number) and therefore the previous card was no longer valid.

Except that the new card was issued on 29th October and I wasn't even in town then. She suggested that maybe my son had misplaced my original and gone in for a new card without telling me, but that doesn't gel with the fact that the card is in a female name an my son is very obviously male! So after my son (having had to walk there) got to the office he showed his receipt for the weekly pass he had got at the beginning of the week and she admitted she didn't recognize him either.  After a lot of talking it was decided to cancel both previous cards in my name and issue my son and I a new one each - with his weekly ticket added to his card!

Meanwhile my son and I were obviously worried that if someone could use my name, address and old mobile number without any further checks being made it might be a case of identity theft starting up so we went and reported it to the police - they would do nothing until my bank account was hacked or other financial transactions were made in my name that I hadn't initiated!!  So now I have to keep an eye open for any unauthorised transactions or any suspicious mail turning up before I can get the police to do anything.

Meanwhile I am trying to understand why anyone would want to get a free iff card in someone elses name?!
