Wishcats are like genies, but each wish they grant uses up one of their nine lives.
[idea mostly from my own story, but mixed with Tarot Cafe's version of wishcats as well]
In the world there is a legend among the feline clan of shapeshifters of black cats with blue eyes that grant any wish you can think of, except a few wishes that can never be granted. It's claimed that if you wish more than three times, wish for more wishes, wish for love, or wish for impossibilities that you will become a wishcat yourself, cursed to grant wishes without receiving any yourself.
This, of course, is mainly hogwash. Most shapeshifters with black fur and blue eyes are not wishgranters. But it seems to be some sort of genetic trait that is connected to the genes for black fur and blue eyes.
The wishcats choose which wishes to grant, but feel a need to grant any wish they hear--they don't have to grant it, but feel a need to anyway.
A dying breed, they're quickly becoming extinct.
