Sometimes I wonder why I find happiness in things that seem
insignificant in the grand scheme of life. Winning a match in a
recreational sports league. Rooting for my favorite professional
sports team and seeing them win. Finding an product I wanted to buy
on sale for 10% off.
I'm often amazed by how much enjoyment children can find out of the
smallest things. A baby playing with a cardboard box. Young children
fascinated by toys they obtain by putting a quarter into a vending
machine. It seems we're often trying to convince children that these
small items are unimportant so that we can dispose of the junk.
If teens could get that much enjoyment out of $0.25, then perhaps they
wouldn't need $50 video games. If adults could get that much
enjoyment out of video games, perhaps no one would bother spending
$100,000 on a sports car.
Maybe the secret to happiness is to figure out a way to appreciate the
little things that make you happy while not dwelling on the minor
disappointments of life.
