I've been sending out résumés recently, looking for ways to make more money since I'm having a hard time finding and keeping enough voice students. I love the teaching, but I don't like the work of looking for students.
I have two interviews this week with community music schools who are looking for a voice teacher, which is very exciting. I also just heard about an office job close by at a place that would be a delight to work at. My friend works there, and she's put in a good word for me already. It's full-time, which isn't what I've generally been looking for, but it's not one of those jobs that would require long hours and regular overtime; it's pretty low-key. I think it could be compatible with my musical pursuits, which are usually evenings and weekends anyway. It would be a step in the direction of stability.
I thought I would love being self-employed, but I didn't reckon on the fact that self-employed people must be constantly looking for work; it's a huge part of your daily job. I don't enjoy that. I've been coming to the realization that I'd much rather just do the work than always be marketing myself (which I need to do as a singer anyway). My day job should be as uncomplicated as possible. If I could get a day job that involves being the resident voice teacher at some institution, that would be ideal. But for now, I'm keeping all of my options open.
There is a college nearby where I have a second-degree contact, and I'm planning to get in touch with them this spring to see if they have any teaching spots open. That would be awesome.
