Change for the better

These updates are coming later and later. Rest assured, I will do my utmost to keep them coming. I should have more time to write, but possibly less to write about, in that I left my job on Friday. The circumstances of my leaving were not ideal (i.e. I don't have anything else lined up), but it's for the best, and without going into details I am in good shape for six months.

Anyway, here's what else happened in August...

Kevin and I went to see Louis C.K. with our friend Andrea. Louis is one of my favorite comedians; his show on FX is both funny and disturbing, and definitely not for everyone. I feel like I'm becoming a bit of a comedy nerd, between listening to the Nerdist podcast and Mark Maron's WTF podcast. I discovered the former after host Chris Hardwick made an appearance at Gallifrey earlier this year, filming a remote for Craig Ferguson. I love not only the interviews, but the "hostful" episodes featuring just Chris, Jonah Ray, and Matt Mira. They are silly, often vulgar, and chock full of pop culture references that resonate with someone of my age and geeky tendencies. Mark Maron's podcast is a different beast, full of brutal honesty from both Mark and his interviewees, and it moves me just as often as it makes me laugh.

After swearing off concerts for the year, I attended a brief in-store performance by Fountains of Wayne. Their new album is excellent, and I've had A Dip in the Ocean stuck in my head for weeks. I've also come to the conclusion that Weird Al's Skipper Dan might be a Fountains of Wayne style parody.

Finally, Kevin and I ramped up the Fame viewing again once Ovation put seasons three and six into rotation. Soon we will have seen them all! And Kevin treated me to a delightful surprise last weekend, taking me to a local production of Fame: The Musical. Resemblances to the characters or plot of the film or TV show were few and far between, but it was enjoyable nonetheless and ended with the song we all know and love.
