A New Horizon

Things are settling, somewhat. Our house guest has returned from whence he came. It felt very strange for a while, as he was here when I moved in; he came with the house, so to speak.

I've got a job now at an import shop downtown. Very trendy and touristy, but with a lot of neat stuff from the Pacific Rim, Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe, etc. They've got greenstone (jade) pieces from New Zealand, and I've got my eye on a couple of them. They also carry a wide variety of milled soap, so I've got a supplier for my lemon verbena habit. I'll be taking a huge pay cut from what I left in Ohio, but the people seem nice, and the hours are really, really flexible. I'll give up some money if I can keep the flexibility. Plus, it's not like I have that much of a choice.

The horizon more than anything else reminds me that I'm not in Ohio anymore. Ohio--my part of it--is quite flat. You can see the flatness to the horizon. It's open to the sky. Not so living in the Shenandoah Valley. We have a wonderful view of the Blue Ridge Mountains from our back porch. The view is so layered, with a "close" mountain and a "far" mountain that is sometimes invisible due to the mist/haze/fog. But when the far mountain is visible, it's amazing. It calls of adventure and travel and "what's on the other side of that mountain?" It's a different horizon.

I sliced my thumb open when I was opening cans to make chili tonight. I was stupid, really. Careless. And it hurt. And boy did it bleed! The water ran red as I rinsed it. I felt queasy and oogie and I had to lie down but I couldn't keep still. Unfortunately, it's my right thumb, which is in constant use when I type. So I'll have to sign off soon. It will also pose an additional challenge Sunday, as I've agreed to play piano for the next two weeks. This will be the first time I've played for an audience in well over 10 years.

What on earth possesses a person to arrange a song in 12/8 time? Or 9/8? Or with all flats (or all sharps) in the key signature?
