last time...

i was sitting on the bus back from campus the other day with my flatmate CK. It was the third week of school and as befitting our post-grad student status- the very first time we had been back on campus since school officially started. together we were dazed and confused at the shock of the number of students and the slow slow pace at which they moved.

as we sat on the bus and looked around the students (kids really! the kids starting uni this year were born in 1990 for god's sake!) i said to CK- you know what, if i do finish my phd this year. this is the beginning of all the 'last times'. She looked at me and went- Last times?

and so i ran through a list
- Heading over to Kenilworth Castle for the annual Guy Fawkes Bonfire Gala
- Whinging over daylight saving
- German Christmas Market at Birmingham
- Leamington Food and Wine Festival

and these are just the major annual events. I began to think of the limited time i had left stumbling out of pubs and ordering something deep fried after a drinking session. Or wandering along the canal and simply just living in this tiny university town. some people can't wait to leave Leam (i've had two other phd friends move to london already last summer, commuting for their university obligations)

this has happened to me before- my last year in Australia for example, but i think the finality of (finally) finishing tertiary education isn't helping. i could still stay on in university but it would be on the other side. with my other degrees there was always the option of continuing on in the same capacity.

but this is it...i must admit it's a strange feeling.
