Yeah, I have wondered at that on occasion--how it seems that so many time a bible thumper with talk as though he or she alone knows the Will of Almighty God. Usually I think of this when they're speaking on abortion, but sometimes I think of it in reference to homosexuality too.

Yes, I agree with you--I don't think people should assume they know the Mind of God. IMHO, it makes them look silly. Unless the person doing it has a lot of power backing up their words. In that case, it makes them look scary.

Of course, I don't personally believe in god, or at least not the sorts of versions of god that most people are interested in worshiping.

I have to be very careful and intentionally doubt my own certainty that there is no god though. If I don't then I'm guilty of the same thing as the true believers.

So back to the main point: gender roles / boys vs. girls
Yeah, that's just one of those things. I actually don't have a problem with there being a bunch of very standard roles in society and having some of those roles be based on gender. What I *do* have a big problem with is society making those roles be completely rigid and inflexible. I have a problem with society not allowing those roles to be bent sometimes, or changed entirely. I especially have a problem with society using a bogus mandate from an all-powerful god (who's supposed to work in "Mysterious Ways", remember) to back up their claims that girls can't do X because it's not their place.

P.S. The above was written hastily and I did not have time to edit. In summary: I agree and support your position (or at least I think I do) although my emphasis is not the same.
