Summary: What happens when Ohno gets lost, and meets someone who is not quite like him
The melodic buzzing is starting to get to him. It has this haunting tone to it that makes Ohno want to continue listening to it and block his ears at the same time.
A loud knock at the door reminds Ohno that the beast is still out there and that the danger of being shredded up into a million pieces is very much real.
The group disentangles their limbs from each other and backs off further into the room.
Ohno stares intently at the flimsy looking door that separates them from the monster and shudders at the thought of that door breaking down. However, a low grunt shifts Ohno's attention from the door to another part of the room.
Jun is already on the ground, mouth bleeding, when Ohno looked, with an irate Nino standing over him, fist clenched. Is that a tooth Ohno see on the ground?
"You fucking traitor..." Nino swings his fists, fully intending to punch the wits out of Jun.
Jun simply stayed on the ground. He squeezes his eyes shut tightly, waiting for the contact between Nino's fists and his face, and seemingly having no intentions at all to retaliate, or even run away.
A few long seconds passes without anything happening. Jun peels his eyelids open timidly and is surprised to see Aiba's back right in front of him. Aiba was trembling with exertion as he tries to block Nino's punch. He is low on energy and definitely no match for Nino if Nino had gone all out.
Nino withdraws his fists and eyes Aiba angrily, a million questions racing through his mind. But he only manages to squeeze out a single syllable. "Why?" He questions.
He questions Jun, for his lack of loyalty, for his lack of sense of justice, for his lack of a conscience.
He questions Aiba, for his naivety, for his generosity with his forgiveness, for his foolishness.
"Because," Aiba starts, but pauses, as if to think of a good reason. "Jun is a good person." He says simply. As if that alone, was enough to justify how Jun personally brought the authorities down on them, the other day at Ohno's office, Freestyle. As if that alone, was enough to explain how Jun can abuse the trust they had in him so easily.
Nino levels a glare at Aiba, speechless at his lack of anger at the despicable man on the ground.
"You don't understand." Aiba starts to plead. "You didn't spend those days, trapped in the lab, being treated like an object, like nothing, by everyone,"
"Well technically I did," Nino interjects.
Aiba ignores him. "but Jun was the only person who treated us like we were sentient beings, like we were worthy of kindness and attention."
"But your friend here, ratted us out. I really doubt your ability to differentiate friends from foes." Nino spits out those scathing words mercilessly and Aiba looks like he is close to tears.
"Hey Nino, stop it." Sho steps in front of Aiba protectively.
"What?" Nino asks incredulously. "You too, Sho?" His eyes grew wide with disbelief. "I thought better of you." Nino shakes his head dismally.
Sho merely sighs tiredly at the disappointment that Nino expressed. He looks like an old man who had been let down so many times that once more was no surprise.
Sho shoots Jun an equally disappointed look.
Jun wipes the blood off his chin and sighs too.
"I know, whatever I say now, you wouldn't believe me. But, at least hear me out, will you? You can punch me to death if you want later."
At Jun's words, Aiba looked gloomier than before, if that is even possible.
"Yes, I called them over to Freestyle." Jun admits.
Nino was about to pounce on Jun, only to be stopped by Sho's hand on his chest.
"But only because I realised they had already found out about us. Remember the time when we were at the capital?” Jun sighs. “One of them saw us.”
Aiba raises an eyebrow quizzically. “They did?”
Jun nodded sadly. “It was only a matter of time before they caught us. It would be better to still have me on their side too so that I can help you guys out when you guys are caught.”
“So you’re saying, you only brought on the inevitable. So that you can help us from within?” Sho tries clarifying.
“That’s one way to put it.” Jun nods.
“How conceited can you get!” Nino barks out a harsh laugh. “Oh look, I’m sacrificing myself, making myself look like the traitor so that I can help you guys from within.” Nino rolls his eyes. “How would we know whether you’re actually on our side or not? You may well be spinning some noble story out for them as well. You traitor!” Nino spits out.
“Stop it Nino! Stop it!” Aiba looks at Nino fearfully. As if under Nino’s further interrogation, Jun may actually admit that he’s a traitor. Something that Aiba fears.
“I don’t expect you to trust me after all these. If I were you, I’d be sceptical as well.” Jun forces out a bitter laugh. “It’s your choice, whether you decide to put your trust in me again. But I really do want to help you guys. And I know that I’m definitely on your side, because I’m letting you in on things that you should never know, but is what you’ve always been looking for.”
Nino was ready to lash out a reply immediately, until he processed what Jun just said.
“You’re letting me in on things that I should never know, but is what I’ve always been looking for?” Nino asks, puzzled. “What do you know about what I’ve been looking for!” Nino starts to get defensive.
Jun gives him a knowing smile. Not a smirk, but a smile of understanding. He steps back and held out his right arm, gesturing to the void behind him.
“This,” Jun paused and looks directly at Nino, “is what you’ve been looking for, for the past half a century.”
Nino continues to stare at Jun, bewildered.
Jun sighs. “The legend, the ritual, from the ancient book.”
Nino’s eyes widens. He dares not believe.
Ohno’s memory brought him back to the very first day. When he spilled water on Nino’s book. Is that the book Jun is referring to?
“It’s true. It exists.” Jun confirms.
Nino lets out a small gasp.
“What exists?” Sho and Aiba ask together.
Jun clears his throat.
“You see the darkness beyond this platform that we’re standing on? In that darkness, lies The Wisp, which resides in the Tree of Life. The Tree of Life has always been here. It is the lab that has expanded so that the Tree of Life is now located within the lab. The soft buzzing melody that you’re hearing now? It’s the voice of The Wisp. It’s awake now. And it’s excited. Because Potentials are here.”
“What is this wisp thing that you’re talking about? The tree? And what are Potentials?” Sho asks, leaning forward slightly in anticipation. The flames of curiosity within him ignited.
Nino remains dumbfounded. Ohno is curious too.
“The Wisp is an ancient magical being. Many thought that it is merely a legend, but well, they are wrong. It’s better for them to remain clueless so that they don’t come searching for The Wisp. The Wisp, is somewhat, a guardian of you robots. Maybe it is a little bold and presumptuous to say this, but I believe most robots are dissatisfied with being merely robots. They are envious of humans and can’t help thinking how their lives would be like if they are actually humans.”
The three robots did not seem to disagree with what Jun had said. Jun continues.
“Hence, The Wisp grants robots’ wishes to become human. But only under a few conditions.” Jun eyes Nino hesitantly. Nino nods for Jun to continue.
“Those who satisfy these conditions are called Potentials. The Wisp loves changing robots to humans and it will try to change any Potentials to humans if it can. It’s a form of love that The Wisp has for her robots. Therefore, it is a little dangerous of Potentials to be near The Wisp, because she may convert the Potentials without their acknowledgement.”
“What are Potentials?” Sho asks again.
This time, Jun sneaks a glimpse at Ohno.
Ohno did not miss that. Something is wrong. Ohno thought.
Jun took a deep breath. “Potentials are robots, who have a human who is in love with them. Love is a strong emotion, a substance that builds a deep bond that connects the human and the respective robot together. This bond allows for the transfer of Life Energy from the human to the robots and The Wisp facilitates the transfer of this Life Energy. When the transfer is complete, the robot becomes human but the human’s memories will be wiped out completely and his lifespan will be halved due to the transfer.”
Jun now looks directly at Ohno.
“Human love for the robot is required. The robot need not love the human.”
To Ohno, it felt as though the ground just disappeared from underneath him.
Is this really what it actually is?
