This project is going slower than I wanted it to. I thought it would be over by now, but it's barely reached its 20's. Will I ever finish it? I keep meaning to abandon it, but then this happens.
QI
At the tail end of what I call my "America trip", we stopped over at Auckland, New Zealand for a few days. It was an afterthought, an almost last-minute decision during travel planning that was made simply because we had to transfer from Auckland anyway, why not stay a while? By that time, Kelly and I had spent all our holidaying energy across the United States, and planned to use Auckland to ease ourselves back into our regularly scheduled lives in the Southern Hemisphere.
So we woke up at whatever o'clock and had brunch every day. I think I ate my weight in bacon, but that's neither here nor there. I mean, we did some touristy things like climb Mount Eden, go up Auckland Tower (the best part of Auckland is in the air, yo!), and sip cocktails at Freddy's Ice House (they let you smash your ice cups after!). But let's be real, it was mostly about the brunch.
We stayed at a hostel that hosted weekly dinners to get people mingling, which is a great idea and is the whole point of hostels. Kelly and I thought about it for a hot minute, and then forgot about it, and so didn't go. Thrilling. Clearly, we had better ways to spend our evenings - eating instant noodles and watching QI, or Doctor Who, or back-to-back-to-back episodes of the Magic School Bus, for instance.
"But mostly all Kelly and I have been doing all day is watch QI, Doctor Who, the Magic School Bus, and nap. WHAT A GREAT DAY! I've also been eating a lot of bacon (or more than usual) in my breakfast lately. Cafes around this area make great bacon! It's like, a cross between English and American bacon -- slightly crispy on the sides but soft in the middle."
That is a direct quote from an email I wrote to Kyri during that time. I was not kidding about the bacon, you guys.
One evening, after a day of brunching and maybe going downtown to watch a movie or something, Kelly and I were back at the hostel, fed, watered, and lounging around in our pyjamas. We were just done watching an episode of QI, during which I kept having tiny naps.
"Are you ready to go to sleep?" said Kelly (or words to that effect).
"No," said I (yawning, probably) "we should watch another episode of QI."
"Okay" said Kelly, and she put on another episode of QI.
In less than a minute, I had fallen asleep. When did Kelly notice I had fallen asleep? Did she continue watching QI alone? Or did she close her laptop and go to sleep as well? These are things I do not know, because I did not wake up until the next morning.
I mean, I think I asked her later, but it was a while ago, and if I did I have since forgotten the answer.
But oh man, this reminds me that I should watch more QI. It is actually quite interesting.
