WAREHOUSE 13
The first (and probably last) time I watched Warehouse 13 was by accident, a couple weeks ago. Kyri and I were in Melbourne and I think it may have been the night we ate at The Hellenic Republic -- after a standard banquet meal, we rolled back to the hotel and were in bed by 9pm, too full of food to move.
Or maybe it was another night. But we had a bottle of wine that accompanied our room upgrade compliments of the hotel because of a Breakfast Incident. Kyri and I had been meaning to drink it for days, but for a couple nights we'd just been either too drunk or too tired to be able to enjoy it properly. But this night, we had eaten an appropriate amount of dinner as to be energetic, and had only gone out for like, one drink. So we drank the bottle of wine. Or rather, I sipped a glass while Kyri imbibed the rest.
All of this was done while watching television, because why not. And so we were watching a film I vaguely remember enjoying, but then it finished and it jumped right into a scene from Warehouse 13. Except that I didn't know it was Warehouse 13, I just thought it was a Christmas-themed movie.
I thought it was Christmas-themed because the first scene was set during Winter, and involved Christmas lights -- the kind you decorate the outside of your house with.
I remember watching it in a kind of sleepy stupor, every few minutes asking myself "should we keep watching?" and sometimes Kyri would say "these special effects! so dumb! WHAT YEAR WERE YOU MADE IN?"
The show began in 2009, and the particular episode we were watching aired in 2011 and yeah, the special effects were pretty bad. The episode was also a
Christmas special from the third season, so it was full of in-jokes and references to the show I didn't get. The whole premise of the episode was that one character got erased from the world in the style of It's a Wonderful Life, so you get to see what the world of Warehouse 13 would be like if Warehouse 13 was never established...which means fuck all to someone who has never seen the show. So imagine watching that while tipsy.
From what I gather, the show is about a team of people who collect artefacts throughout history to keep some sort of balance in the world. Conceptually, it seems like a show I would really enjoy but now all I associate Warehouse 13 with is perpetual confusion.
(the #13 thing was an absolute coincidence! I was just reminded of Warehouse 13 and decided to write about it. and I am waaaay behind on this project!)
