I finally watched Kingsman: The Golden Circle last night. Since I have already known that Channing does not have a lot of scenes in it, therefore I am not very invested in this movie.
Let's start with the things I don't like:
(1) I am sure if you're a fan of Eggsy (Taron Egerton) and Harry Hart (Colin Firth), you probably will enjoy it more than me. The movie's main focus is definitely these two, esp. Eggsy. But I feel that Matthew Vaughn spends too much time on Eggsy's personal life. Vaughn wants to make Eggsy different from Bond and other movie spies, so he decides to develop Eggsy's relationship with Princess T. Also the "street kid turns super spy and marries a princess" story line might look appealing to the movie's young male fans. I just think he can use the time to develop the Statesman characters. Also Eggsy's buddies got quite a few scenes. The one who took care of his dog is an useful plot device, but the other two (one of them was affected by Poppy's virus)? I think their scenes can be totally taken out from the movie. Some may say the same about Agent Tequila, which I actually agree.
(2) Harry Hart's cheap revival plot. I think Harry has accomplished his mission in the first movie, he should remain dead. In Kingsman 2, he doesn't bring new things to the development of Eggsy's character. It's only a fan service. A few flashback will be good, but bringing him back to life is unnecessary. If they ever make a third movie, please don't bring back Merlin or Roxy. Otherwise their deaths become meaningless.
(3) The general tone of the movie is too cartoonish, therefore a lot of the emotional scenes don't quite pay off. For example, after Roxy died, Eggsy and Merlin were sad for a minute, then the next scene they were drinking in an almost comical scene.
(4) I guess the action scenes are okay, but in between, it's very slow. I saw a few people taking toilet breaks when the ski scenes started.
(5) Although I like Julianne Moore as an actress, her villain is not as memorable as Samuel L. Jackson and his side kick. Also I don't understand Whiskey's motivation.
(6) I would rather see them developing Roxy's character than Eggsy's love life.
(7) I love seeing Channing dancing on screen, but Tequila's drug-induced dance is unnecessary. Channing revealed in an interview that scene was not in the script. So basically it was an after-thought. They cast him, he can dance, so let him dance in a stupid way.
Now the things I like
(1) Merlin, I like Merlin. I think I need to make a fan video in which Mark Strong's Merlin bond with Channing Tatum's Jimmy Logan over their love for John Denver songs.
(2) Channing can do accent. In this movie, his accent is quite different from the one he did in Logan Lucky.
(3) Elton John's bowling ball fight scene. The only scene I laughed out loud.
(4) John Denver. I think not just "Country Roads, Take Me Home" is featured in the movie, Denver's Anne's Song can also be heard in a bar scene.
(5) Channing's interrogation scene is actually quite impressive, he can be terrifying. Once again, his accent is great in that scene.
(6) A set up for Kingsman 3 with Channing's Tequila as "exchange" spy who work with the Kingsman. You see, by the end of the second mvoie, only two Kingsmen survive. So they need reinforcement. But they'd better give Channing a lot of scenes in the third movie. A Statesman spin-off is even better.
Box office and fan reactions
Kingsman 2 earned 3.4M yesterday. It's a pretty good start. But do you know how much IT made on its way to the third week? 3.9M! Anyway Kingsman 2 is projected to have a 45-50M debut. It seems they want to make a third movie. I am on the fence regarding Kingsman 3, I will only see it if Channing has a larger role. Speaking of fan reactions, I didn't expect that Channing's package got so many mentions. Well, see it yourself.
Finally, I want to share this by illustrator
Greg Luzniak.
It looks fabulous!
