Will China Save JA?
Last week JA was released in China and made 23.2M, which was more than what it earned in North America during the first weekend. So will Chinese viewers save JA? It will help the movie, but I am not sure it can make money back after the complete theatrical run (It has made 152M so far, with a reported budget of 176M). It has not yet open in Japan. I hope it will do decent business there. But if we count DVD/Blu-ray sale, VOD earnings, it probably will be okay.
As I said before, more people will see JA than Foxcatcher. Judging from Chinese people's responses on social media, Channing Tatum definitely gained more fans because of JA. There is this universal love for Caine's wings and his gravity boots.
Over here, I am not so satisfied with the AO3 and Tumblr JA fandom. The movie is very Mary Sue, and the fandom are full of Mary Sueish fanfictions. Some enthusiastic Jupiter fans are not unlike Gwen fans in Merlin or Cottia fans in The Eagle fandom. I read some essays trying to say that Jupiter is actually a wonderful character, a real heroine. Some even compared Jupiter with Neo, saying Jupiter was criticized because she is a girl. I don't see gender is the issue here. For me, if they reverse the roles of Neo and Trinity, I will still like both of them. Jupiter is not Trinity. I actually can accept Jupiter as a flawed character, it's just that I found the way her fans defended her cringeworthy. Dragging gender into discussion? Why?
But the main reason I am not into this fandom as I want to be is: I do not have an OTP. Unlike Marcus and Esca, I only love Caine in this movie. Stinger is fine, but he is a bit too old. I am still waiting for that The Eagle / Jupiter Ascending crossover fanfiction now. In the meanwhile, I made this fake Japanese movie poster.
BTW, my Marcus figure should arrive this week. Can't wait for it.
