{sam and jo's} In which Dean has some bad news for his brother.

Shitshitshitshitshitshitshitshitshit. It had been the constant litany going through Dean's head once he got the call concerning Jo. Once he got to the scene he did everything he could to keep a lid on the news from getting out to his brother, because he wasn't going to Sam with this unless he had facts. Hard, solid, irrefutable facts that Jo was ( Read more... )

Jo had been gone too long. She was just going for a walk, but that was hours ago and Sam couldn't find her now. He had walked the normal path they took when walking Ford. He went to the nearby park to see if they were playing. He called her cell phone at least twenty times and was sitting in the living room trying not to let himself go crazy.

When there was a knock on the door, his head snapped up to look at it, something just sinking in his stomach. Jo wouldn't knock. She had keys. And if she did knock she would call out his name along with it.

He got up and went to the door, seeing Dean through the peek hole before he opened it. "Dean, I'm..."

He stopped as Ford instantly pushed his way in and pressed up against Sam. There were spots of red in the dog's fur, drying. He looked back up at his brother, taking a step back.

"No..."

Dean reached out and took his brother by the arms, holding him in place. This was exactly what he didn't want. He should have paid more attention to the damn dog.

"Sam. Sam? Look at me. I need you to listen to me, okay?"

Sam shook his head, his eyes squeezing tight. "NO! NO no no NO!" he screamed, trying to break free from Dean's grip. But his brother was stronger, had always been and he just started to shake and crumple a bit.

"She's -- she's not dead, Sam," Dean said softly, trying to hold his brother's gaze as best he could. "She's not dead. She's stable and she's in surgery. She's gonna be fine."

He looked up at Dean, confused and scared. "What happened?" he asked softly.

"Bad luck," Dean replied, pulling his brother into the house and closing the door behind him. "From what we could figure out, she was walking Ford and she walked right into a robbery in progress."

Sam pulled free from his brother and made his way into the living room. He sat on the couch, and Ford jumped up and sat next to him, his head going into Sam's lap. He pet the dog behind his ears, unable to look at him or Dean.

"I walked the path. We take the same path every time. I didn't see anything. Not even a crime scene, Dean. Where was she?"

"Saxon's Grocery," he replied, tilting his head in the general direction. "Over on eighth."

"We never go that far," he said. "Why was she there..." he was talking to himself mostly, his fingers working through Ford's fur a moment before he looked up at Dean.

"I want to see her."

"You can't," he said softly. "Not right now. She's in surgery, and she's going to be there for a couple hours."

"I'll wait outside then." He was being insistent now.

"Sammy," Dean said softly. He knew this probably wouldn't be the best idea. Taking his brother into a building loaded with drugs and everything else. But he also figured that this was probably the only way he'd be able to keep an eye on him.

"Fine. But you stick with me, alright?"

Sam was shocked when his brother said fine. He had a feeling he was going to have to fight tooth and nail to get out of the apartment and Dean put him on some kind of lockdown.

He nodded, grateful. "Ok. Um, give me twenty minutes though to give Ford a bath." He looked down at the dog who looked so sad. "I think it'll help him."

"Okay," Dean nodded, before leaning back against the seat of the couch. He knew it probably wasn't the greatest idea, but he needed Sam somewhere where he could see him. Somewhere where he could guarantee that he wasn't going to do anything stupid.

Hospital was probably better than home. Dean would get called back to handle some things at the station eventually, and once he was gone who knew what Sam would do if he was home alone. At least, at the hospital, Dean could leave him with someone. Someone could watch him.

Sam brought Ford into the bathroom and washed the dog down, getting all the blood unmatted from his fur. He felt like crying, and Ford licked Sam's face to keep him from breaking down until he got control back.

Ford had helped Sam through bad days before. He wasn't sure that right now, they could help each other.

Once the dog was washed and dried, Sam opened the bedroom door and let Ford jump up on the bed. He went straight for Jo's side and put his head on her pillow. "I know, boy," Sam said softly. "I'm going to go check on her. You be good."

Changing out of his wet clothes, Sam was still buttoning up his shirt as he walked back into the living room. "Do they know who shot her?" he asked. "Did they catch him?"

"We're working on it," Dean nodded. "There were a couple witnesses that got a good look at him, so we're hoping to have something soon." He got up, adjusting his jacket as he moved towards the door. "Cas is on it. He'll find her."
