Daruma

Branching out from related subject to related subject like I do, I learned about Daruma dolls and am enchanted by the idea.Daruma brought Buddhism from India to China and Japan and is celebrated on my birthday. This I found out looking up some more information I came across in another geisha book I am reading.Geisha dance at certain festivals throughout the year. The Daruma festival is on my birthday and I found the custom to be appropriate to start for my 50th.
The doll has no arms or legs because Daruma's limbs atrophied from extended meditation. He was annoyed that he kept falling asleep during meditation so he cut off his eyelids which turned into tea leaves, a method used later to stay awake. This is why Daruma dolls have blank spots for eyes. The doll is also weighted on the bottom to always be upright ,showing perseverance.
People buy Daruma dolls at this time of year at temples. They make a wish and paint in one pupil with a black marker. When the wish comes true, they paint in the other pupil. This can also be done for setting and accomplishing a goal.Oh the possibilities.
