Cheap and easy ...feeds 6 ( we have two adults, 3 teens, and a small person in our household )
Southern Beans
Ingredients for Southern Beans
3 smoked hamhocks ( Cost $2.00 at Wallyhell )
1 Family size can of red beans
1 regular size can or pinto beans
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper ( if you don't have this it's no biggie )
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoon hot sauce
1/2 medium chopped onion
Directions
Boil hamhocks on high heat for 45 minutes. Add all seasonings except hot sauce and onion. Continue boiling for 20 minutes. Add canned beans, hot sauce, and onion. Boil on medium heat for 10 mins.
You can serve the beans with cornbread or steamed rice ( which is super cheap to make ) and a salad for a nice healthy , low cost meal.
I estimate the whole meal for 6 with cornbread and a garden salad is about $7.50 total.
