Part 24
Interlude: The important things in life
“Son, are you sure you want to do this?” his father asked him.
Jared frowned; his hazel eyes remained on the computer screen. He had been studying the numbers for hours and didn’t have time to deal with his father.
“Dad I’m busy right now. Can we talk later?”
“Jared, you are always busy. Your mother is worried about you.”
“There’s nothing to be worried about. The shares for Padalecki’s Oil has double this quarter compare to last. We have increase our profit margins by 36%.”
“She’s not worried about the business. In fact she thinks you are working to much and don’t have time for a love life.”
“You don’t have to worry. I’ve been fucking plenty of people.”
“Watch it your tone! You know perfectly well that’s not what your mother means.” His father growled at him.
Jared leaned back on his plush leather chair, finally looking up at his father. “I have no interest in relationships at this point of my life.”
“You are just like me at your age. You are working so damn hard that you are going to burn yourself out. I had your mother and she kept me from destroying myself. You need to slow down and enjoy life before it pass you by.” His father lectured. Jared kept his face carefully blank; free from growing irritation he felt toward the Senior Padalecki.
“I’m working on this deal….”
His father quickly interjected, “You are always working on some deal. You need to remember what’s important in life.”
“Our family.” Jared snapped.
“You are partly right. It’s spending time with your family. Since you’ve became the CEO of Padalecki Oil, you have been working all the time. You are barely at the ranch. Your mother is worried sick and Bella mopes around the house, waiting for her big brother to show his face.”
“Are you trying to make me feel guilty?”
“Is it working?” His father retorted.
A smile curved over his lips, as he remained silent, staring at his father. As much as the senior Padalecki got on his nerves at time, Jared love his old man. Robert Padalecki was all bark and no bite unlike his son. That was why Jared took over their company and was in the process of cleaning house. There were several individuals in the company that had been taking advantage of his father’s kind nature. Jared was going to put an end to it.
“I’ll come by the house tomorrow.”
His father continued to glare at him clearly not satisfied with his answer.
“I’ll come tonight.” Jared amended. His father shook his head at him.
“What….? You want me to come right now?”
A big smile broke across his father’s face. “I knew my son was a genius after all! Let’s go.”
“I can’t….”
“Jared do not make me call your mother on speaker phone. That is the last thing we both don’t want to happen.” His father warned me.
“Fine.” Jared grumbled, quickly saving his work on his computer before shutting down the equipment.
Both father and son walked out of the office and got on the elevator together.
“God willing, you will get it one day, son.”
“Get what?”
“When you find the one that gives you peace, you will slow down and realized that money and power are not what makes you happy. It’s coming home to them at night and seeing their face first thing in the morning.”
“You are beginning to sound like Mom.”
“She is a wise woman. You need to start listening to her more.”
“Is that why you never moved us to Dallas? Because of mom?”
“Your mother loves Prairie Hill. She considers this home and I would do everything in my power to make her happy.”
“So you end up commuting hours each day for her? But isn’t that an oxymoron as you end up spending less time with her each day due to the commute?” Jared pointed out.
His father glowered at him. “No one likes a smartass.”
“Just pointing out the obvious, old man.”
“Shut up, Jared.”
