Feminism Just Means We Want Equality

I consider myself a feminist. I also consider myself a comic fan. I enjoy reading them, but also understand that for the Big Two (Marvel and DC comics), I'm not the primary audience. There have been a few token attempts to woo female readers (Spider-Man Loves Mary-Jane, Spider-Girl and DC's MINX line) and there are honestly great books that appeal ( Read more... )

The Girl Wonder quote is Spot On! Somehow women are supposed to put up with female characters being overly sexualized, but would men do the same? And I think that as a woman going into a store, I'd react pretty similar if the store featured half-naked men statues as half-naked women statues but there are men out there who seek out the half-naked women statues, but would be offended by half-naked men statues. Funny, isn't it? Well, not ha-ha funny, more like ironic double standard funny.

Umm ... men are half-naked quite frequently. Have you actually met a man who was offended by half-naked men? Or a statue of a naked or half-naked man? Anyone protesting the David? Anyone freaking out about a Namor figurine? Or Hawkman? As a gay man, I can tell you that topless guys in shorts aren't particularly uncommon nor is porn with men as the subject. And half-naked guys are seen in ads all the time. A&F uses them in their print ads and their instore ads. Haven't seen a protest yet.

half-naked men in superhero comics? Yeah, rarely and if you do, it's inside, not on the cover. Except maybe for Wolverine's Weapon X series, and even then I think the naked pics of him were reserved to the inside.

I looked at my toy shelves-men coverd from head to toe, many also with faces/heads covered. Statue case - same thing. We have a Robin statue where he's got shorts on.

Maybe if you shop at a store with a lot of wrestling fans - otherwise nope, not a lot of half naked men around.

First, I think we should note that the post I was responding to was talking about manikins, so it was not limiting itself to comic covers ( ... )

Whoops! Not Manikins, but statues. My comic shop sells statues of Namor, Hawkman, and the Hulk. Oh, and Warlock in that skimpy outfit he used to wear.
