I guess the gate was nice because I've always wrestled with drop sides with that peddle on the bottom. It is irritating. The gate has two latches on either side of the crib so it would be impossible for little arms to undo it themselves. I liked having it down when the baby was very small for easy access (and peeking at naptime!) ;)
It coverted to a toddler bed and then a full size, but with all the moving we did and through reassembling and disassembling with two kids, it's done for. The screws just slide in and out of the wood like pegs. We're going to refinish it for my first son's bed (but we'll need a converter kit or just jimmy it to fit with the frame), and start anew with the baby. I hope they've gotten better! Like I said, I bought it seven years ago and if I remember correctly, they just started making the cribs into converter beds!
