hey there...I have totally got to run, going out of town, an hour behind schedule!! BUT if you google a Montessori term, explosion of language, that should help...I would explain it myself, but don't have time just now.

The Bee Boy is not talking much either, but he is very advanced in both his fine and gross motor skills, and has very good eye hand coordination in both as well (aiming, etc) I think part of his 'delay' is that I'm also teaching him Spanish. He understands when I ask him to do things in either language, and he does say about 20 words....or, did...!

He does this weird thing, always has, where he spends time mastering a word and then virtually never says it again...! I fully expect a typical explosion of language around 2 years old, both due to personality (spends alot of time absorbing things and mastering them) and the bilingual issue (which commonly causes some delay...my 15 year old stuttered briefly around 2yrs. because of the English/Spanish...cognitive/language function ahead of the muscle motor controls in speach at that point)

So, the most important thing I have to say is in terms of connections. If your babe is making connections, you can see the logic, get her needs met, indicate, etc...don't worry a whole lot, talking will come! As a 20 year veteran in the field of Montessori, I always chuckle to myself when I see those particular children coming into my class that have little or no actual spoken language skills, but in a few short months I have to ask them repeatedly to 'be quiet' at appropriate times (circle time, etc!!!)

and, one last thingey! I have also often seen children that can sing words to songs perfectly before they master the art of 'conversation'

hope that helps!! now off to Tennesseeeeeeee...will check email probably Monday unless I get lucky! (computer wize, that is!)

:)

Thanks so much for this info! Ruby knows what's going on and she understands so many things I say to her, sometimes I'm blown away at the things she understands. I'm going to look that up right now. The only reason I am concerned now is because of my Father making a huge deal out of it. Before that I wasn't concerned at all and felt that she would just start when she's ready.

Thanks so much!
