Hey there. I was asked to help you by someone in the pregnant community who saw your post regarding lactose intolerancy in infants and left me a message asking if I could offer any insight.

Talk to your doctor. It's VERY rare that an infant would be lactose intolerant, but if you are concerned about it, they can refer you to a hospital to run a test for it. I know this, because my son is one of the 'rare' ones that truly is lactose intolerant. This being, because my son is native american, and 75% of all NA's are lactose intolerant, so it's not so rare for my race. For the majority of infants of other races though, it's seriously one of the least common things ever. They can run simple tests to prove whether he truly is or not.

2 weeks is not long enough for your body to fully process a change in diet. Just keep it up, watch labels, and talk to your doctor about what could be causing it, maybe it's from a different food you're eating. It could also be a problem with your letdown or how your milk comes out, instead of formula in a bottle, try expressing and giving him EBM in a bottle, maybe he doesn't know how to latch and drink from the breast properly and is getting too much air, and finds it much easier to do it from a bottle. Worth a shot, before you proceed any further, if it solves the problem, then you can always just pump and bottle-feed EBM.

I'm still researching this because I'm getting a hundred different answers, but ask your doctor about drops you can put into EBM, I've heard there's enzyme drops, lactaid, that's safe for infants, but once again, conflicting answers, but worth asking your lactation consultant, LaLecheLeague or your doctor about. If it's true, it's far better then resorting to formula.

I know this, because after my son was tested for lactose intolerancy, I was told I had to quit breastfeeding. I went to formula, and he was better, but I hated giving him that crap, and still fully regret it to this day, I didn't find out there may have been other options until later on. I don't eat dairy either, so I Don't know how I had lactose in my milk, I'm lactose intolerant myself.

If in the end, you do go to formula, since you have a son, avoid soy formula like the plague. They have a hormone which mimics estrogen, and can really affect a young boy's development, especially in a stage like this where they're growing so rapidly. The formula I used, and recommend heavily over soy, is "Lacto-free Enfilac". It's basic formula, but without the lactose, and without the worry of weird hormones turning your precious boy into a little girl. ;)

By the way, had to comment on this one, because HIM rocks.

wow, thank you so much for taking the time to give me so much information! I really appreciate it.

You know, I've never heard that about soy formula, but I'm glad you told me. I don't want anything bad happening to my little guy just because of the formula I chose.

Just so you know, I am seeing a lactation consultant in the morning, and will hopefully have a better idea of what is going on. I am going to try my hardest to keep breastfeeding, I absolutely hate bottles and formula!

I'll make sure to let you know how things go, and again, thank you so much for your help.
