Personnel suck (again)

Apologies in the unlikely event someone who works in personnel/HR reads this. Where I work, even the head of personnel has said his mission is to destroy them. Unproductive and incompetent are the only two words I will use ( Read more... )

Nope nothing like that. Just to set the scene a bit, I wear hearing aids as I was born deaf (don't worry I can still hear almost 100%). I am on a semi fast track that monitors my career progression, but I have to do everything myself (the jobs, promotions etc). Anyway as a result of me moving from London to Bristol, my career progression has been slowed slightly because I have done two totally different jobs.

To cut a long story short, the personnel people said they did not think I was doing well and they think my hearing may have impacted on this. And oh yeah, get promoted otherwise we kick you off the scheme! Funny enough I have taken exception to this so I have queried them, 3 times now because they refuse to give me any evidence on which they base their judgements. I also think they are too dumb to realise just how much learning I have had to do.

My opinion is that they are having problems and now want to get rid of me to cover up their incompetence. Only they were incredibly stupid and threw my hearing into the mix again with no evidence or backup. Thus goes the tale!

Jesus, that's awful. :/ Is it the civil service that you work for?

Yep it is civil service working for the military bunch in Bristol. I know where you work (used to work with your colleagues). It is only personnel, I have not had any problems with the people I actually work with.

Sorry, I have been rude and not gone and said hello. Hiya, nice to read a bit more about you (and put a (pretty) face to the name). I got curious about LJ when SB mentioned it so I though I would give it a go. Naturally I got curious and had a peek at your profile as well. I hope you don't mind.

Of course I don't mind - that's the whole point of LJ; meeting new people and making new friends. :)

I'm fairly sure they can't legally kick you out of a scheme if they're citing your disability as a reason for your lack of performance. The DDA says they have to make reasonable alterations to their processes and the working environment to put you on a level playing field with others. Their having said that it's your hearing that is the issue is really stupid of them! Even if that really _were_ the issue, they automatically put themselves in the position of having to fix it, not just kick you off the scheme, don't they..?

EDIT: I am hoping I havent got things muddled up. I am assuming you work in the same place SB used to?

Yep you are right and considering HR are meant to do even more mandatory equal ops training than I do, their stupidity has been incredible. The trouble is that I read the small print about the grievance procedure. It means a senior HR person would be appointed to investigate, have no legal powers and probably work to cover the thing up. I think I want to leave the scheme after I have got my promotion confirmed and sorted out my job. They can't kick me out of work, just the scheme. Once job security is assured.... well a letter will be sent.

The personal point for me is that I don't want adjustments. I have managed perfectly well in life so far, have been successful above the odds and so I am proudly independent. Judged on my merits and all that.

Phew, was worried I was getting confused. Creeping old age!
