Some days, the dark expanse of space stretches out before him, infinite black broken by pinpoints of light. The planets and stars, luminous matter that coalesces into planetary systems and galaxies, surrounding him, taunting him, saying I am here, come and touch me. Things close and things of immeasurable distance, but he knows, he knows, he knows he can reach them. He can reach them and touch them and hold them, and he can burn as bright as a sun, as a thousand suns. He feels, he feels, he feels, and he can do anything, him and his ship.
His ship.
His ship, all sleek metal, silver and glowing blue and bright, bright, bright within. His beautiful ship, beautiful, and they slip through the universe together, and he never wants to lose this, never wants to be earth-bound again, neither of them. No more shipyards or bars in Iowa, no waiting in a life that's only a shadow of what it could be, no more, never again.
Because it's this ship, only this ship, and it's been like that since he first saw her in the shipyard, first saw her when she was little more than an empty husk with barely any wiring or circuitry to speak of. Because he didn't know, not until he saw her, didn't understand, didn't feel that pull to have his feet leave the Earth, to slide out into the blackness beyond, to see a star in the sky and realize that he could get there, see it, touch it, burn with it.
But he can. He will. He does, the man and his ship, the ship and her captain, Kirk and the Enterprise, and he's never letting this go. And they'll burn, they'll burn, they'll burn, like the suns that they reach for.
And when they finally burn out, they will shake the universe.
