Well, well, well
like everyone, these were not the finals that I expected for the Australian Open in 2017, I think. I was expecting to see Djokovic and Murray have another tussle and for all the other ladies' names that were sugested, Serena Williams and Kerber, perhaps.
Now, I've been following it via headlines, maybe, so there was the shock of Djokovic's loss and the question of whether finally getting the French had taken something out of him, so it looked like it was Murray's to win his first slam as no. 1, and his first Aussie Open, but no. Dan Evans fell after his best slam run yet. So, I presumed Wawrinka would be the winner, having won the last slam, and all the while Federer and Nadal were making their way through the draw, players we've almost stopped thinking about, or I have as I wonder whether Raonic or anyone else would step up next. I just saw the highlights of Nadal's semi with Dimitrov, which looked like it was of a very high quality. If Dimitrov can take heart and maintain that quality, perhaps he's back in the conversation.
But one hopes both Federer and Nadal recover to give of their best. Again. I'm sure it'll be more emotional for them both as they, particularly Nadal, have faced such lows.
Meanwhile, one is forced to type the words 'Serena' and 'ominous'. I don't remember when Kerber lost, I do remember when Konta did. I'm a little torn that the BBC will only be showing highlights, not the final live, as I like watching the ladies final, and remembering all the glum finals where the sisters hated playing each other way back when. Obviously, winning would mean a lot to both of them - Serena to get past Graf, which we expected to have happened a lot sooner, and Venus after so very many long years, It all adds quite the emotional tenor to the occasion.
