Decided to go biography again this week and one thats relevant I think even if you have no interest whatsoever in Top Gear.

This is the book that was released after the accident that very nearly killed Hammond back in 2006, the one that was so severe by rights he shoulda been dead or severely brain damaged because of how damn BAD it was.

This follows from Richard plotting to tackle the North Pole, to his early memories and how he got into Top Gear out of being a radio host of all things... to his accident and the very long road to recovery as told by his wife Mindy told with great humor and own bogglement and how his life had turned at that point. The real meat of the book is how they try and help his smashed brain recover when at first he would forget things within seconds and babble on the same conversations over and over as he'd forgotten them or the fact he had eaten, to leaving notes just on the off chance he woke up while she was out the room and cards from his girls.

Even May bringing him lego which turned out to be a god send as his extreme short termism could handle messing around with bricks for hours even he admitted it was like being a kid again when he was with it enough to realise.

I wanted to recommend it because it shows not just the patient struggling  back into semblence of normal (And there's no doubt at all he was extremely lucky to recover how well he did and have no side effects) and the family and friends behind them picking up the pieces to help those little steps towards it. Even if his normal eventually involved sled dogs pissing on him a lot during training.

It is also my hope that Schumacher will also be one of the lucky ones as he's got a long road ahead yet. May his recovery go well.

Please note all the things I upload for this series are tagged with Books for easy linkage :)

Notes: Sorry about the sticker glue, I removed one really obscuring his face and now it's like a half beard. All the other Hammond books are more Top Gear related with mentions of how the crash has effected him since filled with his usual sense of humor. The infamous Top Gear Life in Australia with the headset incident still cracks me up from the third book.
