Just to make life more hallucinatory, tonight's film was the divisive Oliver Stone (with input from Quentin Tarantino, among others) film Natural Born Killers. Stone's one of those filmmakers that some people love, some people hate. I can kind of take or leave him, but this was... interesting at least. Surreal, certainly. Talk about a fucking HYPER movie (shifting shots and styles [animation, b&w, color washes, survelliance video, superimposition, etc] like every few frames) and satire/social-commentary applied with a sledgehammer. But then, that IS the point, I suppose - it's an indictment of both the psychotic fiends and the society that creates and feeds them. The most direct way to get that across is to go completely over the top and throw everything that society perversely celebrates back in their faces but in doing that, you kind of can't help making an ass of yourself a little bit. And this movie does go over the top: there's that hyperkinetic cinematographic style for one. The performances are also really whacked out - Woody Harrelson's Mickey and Juliette Lewis's Mallory are probably the more restrained roles in the film, especially when stacked up next to Tommy Lee Jones's warden and Robert Downey Jr.'s "news"man, and damn if that isn't saying something. I dunno, like I said, any movie that goes this nuts with graphic violence, uses cartoons to illustrate a character's mindset and portrays sexual abuse as some kind of demented sitcom sets itself up to be easily dismissed as pure shock treatment, and it IS flawed in that respect. But it's still worth watching at least once.

Anyway, not too much to report. Just doin my thing, you know? But I do get this weird sense lately. This sense of convalesence, of dawning congruity. Or something like that, I can't put my thumb on it. But that could be the beer talking. I dunno though. Things seem to be going well.
