Anyone out there in internetland ever see Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas? Hmm, all of you. Ok, put your hands down. Well, how many of you remember how well recieved it was when it was released? You know how local news stations used to have a movie critic on friday nights? I remember Joel Siegel coming on WABC (Channel 7-NYC), and warning parents that the movie was specifically not for kids, and that it was Tim Burton's twisted view of a Christmas Story. I remember that it was out of theaters just as soon as it was in. Finding it in video stores was a real bitch for the longest time as well.
Well, the freaks and geeks wouldn't stand by for that. People sought this movie out as much as possible. I'm guessing the same people that were responsible for this movie's cult status were also responsible for making Donnie Darko and Cannibal: The Musical cult films as well. Ok ok.... I'm one of them.
Anyway, for years The Nightmare Before Christmas has been the "black sheep" of Christmas movies. Don't get me wrong, i've never gathered around the tube with my family and watched Miracle on 34th Street ("What was the miracle?" The trains were on time, that's what....) or Jimmy Stewart in It's a Wonderful Life... Shit i've never even seen the whole thing once in my entire life. But, i do make sure i see A Christmas Story at least once during the holiday season. I hate spending the holidays with my family, but i can't imagine a single Christmas without Ralphie....
But i digress. My point is that The Nightmare Before Christmas was the cool kind of anti-Christmas Christmas movie that most people left alone unless they were fans of Tim Burton, or had been forced to sit down and watch it at some point.
Now, you're all probally thinking i'm going to rant about how it's being rereleased into theaters. Nope. That's not my issue here. My beef is with the 'Special Edition' of the soundtrack. In addition to the amazing music that is sung throughout the film, there's a couple of bonus tracks added on. Namely, covers of the movie's songs done by Marilyn Manson, Fiona Apple (who i'm pretty sure would have wasted away at this point), Fall Out Boy, Panic at the Disco, and She Wants Revenge. WTF?!?!?!?
Do we really need Fall Out Boy and Panic at the Disco fucking with these classics? And here's my real issue: The Myspace Generation (that's what i'm calling all these young fucks now), completely devoid of any sense of originality, is no longer content to rip off the shit that was popular of prior generations, they now have to rip off the shit that was looked down on.
Case in point:
That's from
IMDB.com, and basically says that The Nightmare Before Christmas is over a thousand percent more popular this week than it was last week. Okay, it's four days before Halloween, i'll let it slide.... No, no i won't. Man, this is a Christmas movie, not a Halloween movie. Halloween movies are scary and gory, and make you want to sleep with the lights on. This is festive. FUCK!!!!!
And if it was just an issue of kids watching this movie and enjoying it the same way we did, i'd be fine... Happy, even. But no, The Myspace Generation has to make their own mark. They gotta let the world know that they were here... Like we'd ever forget. So, they let Fall Out Boy put their own spin on it. I'm sorry, but who the fuck asked Fall Out Boy to step in? Seriously... There was no problem with it, so why fix what's not broken? Fuckers.
Ok, I'm done. Back to the game. BTW: In case anyone was wondering, i've been saying that the Sox will win it in five for the past week, and i'm sticking by that, eventhough it looks like they're gonna sweep it right now. ::Turns around:: Holy Shit! The Rockies scored 5 runs in the last 10 minutes? Okay, i'm done now, gotta get back....
