Kitten fic! Dude, does anyone even remember this?
The Kitten Saga
begins here and
continues here. This segment picks up where the last left off.
In conclusion: all
r_becca's fault. I will happily accept any and all cute pictures of kittens and/or cats as bribery and incentive to continue.
"The most important thing is to make sure they don't get bored," Dr. Brock said, dangling a piece of string above John's head. She was one of the biologists who'd arrived from Earth on the Daedalus, and the only person in Atlantis who had a degree in veterinary care in her list of accomplishments. Carson had leapt on her offer to help like a drowning man, and she'd been dragged into the emergency meeting in the med-lab. Major Lorne, Dr. Zelenka, Carson and Elizabeth were gathered around her and the bed full of kittens, listening intently. "Young cats need a lot of stimulation, and they have a lot of energy at this age. I'd keep them together, because that way they can entertain each other, but they'll probably need a lot of toys to keep themselves busy. I'd say they're about three months old, so they can eat solid food. Chicken, fish, anything high in protein, since we probably don't have kitten chow handy."
At the mention of food, Rodney poked his head out from under the pillow with a small meow. John abandoned the string to bound over, poking his nose into Rodney's face. Rodney pulled back with an irritated sound and batted at John with one tiny paw.
There was a flurry of quickly suppressed coos from the gathered personnel, and a brief round of embarrassed coughing. Oblivious to his audience, John pushed his face into Rodney's again and licked a stripe up the side of Rodney's head, which led to an energetic tussle as Rodney wrapped his paws around John's neck and tried to throttle him. Their antics caught the attention of Teyla and Ronon, both of whom trotted across the bed to investigate. The fight quickly degenerated into a four-way kitten free-for-all, which produced snickers from Elizabeth's secondary command staff. She resisted the urge to pinch the bridge of her nose. "Will they do this all the time?"
"Oh, of course not." Dr. Brock reached fearlessly into the hissing pile and drew Rodney out to cuddle against her. He meeped, sounding annoyed, then realized where he was, snuggled against Dr. Brock's expansive chest and produced a tiny, hopeful purr. "They'll wear themselves out and sleep a lot. They're like babies at this age - they like to investigate everything with their teeth, so wherever they go, it'll have to be kitten-proofed."
"Speaking of that," Elizabeth began, looking around at the others. "Someone needs to--"
Major Lorne backed away, holding up his hands defensively. "Dog person!"
"I can't have cats in my infirmary," Carson said.
"Kittens and electrical equipment together is a very bad idea," Dr. Zelenka said quickly. "They cannot come to the physics labs."
"Cowards," Elizabeth muttered, glaring at them all. "Fine. I'll take them and keep them in my office. Unless...?" She looked hopefully at Dr. Brock.
"Oh, I'd love to have the little guys, but Dr. Zelenka is right. My labs have to be a sterile environment for my research and keeping kittens there wouldn't be a good idea," she said cheerfully. "I'm sure you'll be fine."
