Oh yeah... Another Thing...

I've decided I'm going to get another animal companion. Lady K was such a great friend and I still want a buddy to go through the next 10-20 years with me and live our lives. I still cannot reconcile another cat, they would all be unfairly compared to Lady K because she was perfect. So, I'm going to get a dog. Which is what I originally intended ( Read more... )

Shibas are super-active and need good excersize every day -- definitely not like a cat in that regard. I've thought about getting one myself because they're so damn cute and reasonably low maintenance as far as dogs go, but given *my* issues and travel schedule I know I'd come to resent it in short order. :P

I dunno Bryce, it seems like a dog at this point in your life is just another self-created obstacle to figuring out what you're going to do with yourself and how you're going to get there. Dogs tie you down and limit your freedom in much the same way that a kid does -- things will be considerably harder for you logistically if you get a dog now and your work/school options won't be as open, and IMO the last thing you need at this juncture is another obstacle preventing you from achieving whatever goals you set for yourself. Get the dog *after* you've made a life for yourself and when you know you can give it what it needs.

You've had a great year of self-discovery and you're on an upward trajectory -- I just want to see you become the person you want to be, and I think jumping head-first into a dog-sized commitment any time soon is going to make it much harder for you to focus on your priorities. Between the *constant* needs of a dog and the ever-present danger of game addiction sucking up all of your time, you're throwing the dice more than you should be I think. :P

This is just a mandatory "I'm your friend and I think getting a dog is a really bad move for you at this point in your life" piece of feedback. I understand that you're fully capable of making your own decisions and I won't keep harping on it. :)
