The Origins of My Musical Tastes Part 2. Rage Against The Machine!!!

After telling you about my hard hitting days as a gangsta rap music lover, I'm about to take you on a trip to my other music that I enjoy and that being Rock. I can't generally categorize it cause I love so many different bands. I will tell you who I don't like though and that is mainstream generic crap hence Nickelback, Creed, Saliva, and Half of the bands currently out there.

My first rock influences had to be Green Day and Offspring in like 1994 or so when Offspring came out with Self Esteem and Green Day had 'Dookie" after that I just spawned out into mostly mainstream music including Nirvana (still so glad to have seen them live), Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Helmet, Sonic Youth, Pearl Jam, The Pixies, Melvins etc, you can say I dug the whole Seattle grunge scene. I was 13 or 14 and kind of a rebel so I figured this and hip hop would mesh quite well for me. I also enjoyed Korn and unfournantly a little bit of Limp Bizkit. The one group that really hit a chord with me was Rage Against the Machine and I can honestly say that they are the only group worthy of mixing rock and roll with elements of hip hop. I just loved the raw energy of Zack DeLaRocha. I remember picking up their first album the self titled Rage Against the Machine and seeing the monk on the cover being burnt up that this group had some real grit. Tom Morello brought to the forefront some evolutionary guitar skills that to this day as had an impact on me. Zack was a mad man bent on his beliefs and theories on capitalism, greed, America, and other radically charged issues. I still remember the greatest show I ever attended and that was Rage Against The Machine with Wu Tang Clan and Atari Teenage Riot. To say this show was spectacular would be a understatement. Other band I really started to get into was Nine Inch Nails. Trent Renzor scared the hell out of me him and Marilyn Manson. Manson and Renzor used to be a team and they toured together and were truly parents nightmares. That "Closer" video was one of the greatest videos I'd seen at the time. It was like a cult bondage torture flick with a lot of mystery left to the viewer. I remember these days where I would be mowing the lawn throwing my fist and the air and saying "Fuck You I won't do what you tell me" to RATM. I also got into Tool as I remember seeing the videos 'Prison Sex" and "Sober" on The Box music network. Anyone remember that channel, it was a channel ppl would pay like 1.99 or so to hear the video they paid for. That was on old school Satellite TV. It was like F4 or something on the sat frequencey. Anyways they played videos you would never see on MTV. It was like Fuze when it first came out or Much Music. They would play Eazy E "Real Compton City G's" and great rock cause the viewers picked what they wanted to hear those were the days. Tool's lead singer Maynerd was a strange invidual. I guess back in those days the music was all about the frontman who fronted the band and there persoanality. I remember seeing Tool at Lollapalloza 1997 w/Korn and Snoop Dogg and Maynerd had on black face paint and was hollering about being a real man. He was just insane to me.

One band that I still love to this day is Rancid, I first started listening to them when "Out Came The Wolves" came out. I just loved their vibe and that led to other punk bands and a current love for punk music. After I initially got through my anger/ rage which extended into college. I also feel in love with Sublime and Bad Religion and lots of Punk Rock. NOFX was cool as was Dead Kennedys.

When Slipknot came out I was warped withtheir anger and madness with their stage antics. I saw them at their first Ozzfest and when they would run into each other and give each other concussions. I would later see Mudvayne also at Tattoo the Earth tour in Pontiac and "Dig" became one of my favorites. So after many Ozzfest's, Slipknot shows and other heavy metal bands I started to branch my tastes out.

I think I need to give a lot of credit to my buddy Jake Nasty who would introduce me to some great bands and vice versa. We had some great times going and seeing 30 Seconds to Mars, Lost Prophets, Partying Hard with Andrew WK, Jake almost getting in a fight over a guitar pick at Blindside, Cold, Hatebreed, Glassjaw, Hanging out with Sammy J from the Apex Theory, shit there are so many more to remember. I loved seeing a band in front of about 200 people at the old intersection and then seeing them blow up and become huge. I also loved to go to Warped Fest and pay 30 bucks to hear 30 bands and up for a all day rock fest some of these bands would become huge and seeing them play in front of 30 people would make me recall on the past. I try to make it to warped still to this day.

The past couple of years music has taken a backseat in my life with getting married and having my first born my daughter Emma Elizabeth. I still when I get a chance relax and listen to new groups like Artic Monkeys, Panic At The Disco and oldies like AIC, NIN, RATM, and Nirvana and best of all I get to listen to Jack Johnson or even some Ryan Adams with my baby girl in my arms. Part 3 will be some more concert experiences and my current music play list and why I need an Ipod. Till next time.
