yuletide recs part 2

Before the Yuletide reveal, a few more stories I really enjoyed.

I can no more cross this room than Zeno's arrow - Friday Night Lights - It's like there's this huge ravine or something between them, the Grand frigging Canyon, him on one side, Lyla and Riggins and everything that used to make him happy on the other

Wonderful exploration of Jason Street and what he's lost. The writing in this is lovely, and the last scene got me all choked up. Just wonderful.

Blush and Knock Your Knees - Friday Night Lights - Matt/Julie, Landry. Names matter.

Matt! Julie! MattandJulie! Wonderful, sweet story that fits right into the show.

Useful Things - Judging Amy - "Amy, you are a Gray. And Grays pick themselves up and are of use in this world."

One of my favorite things about Judging Amy was the show's depiction of public service through Amy's work as a Family Court Judge and Maxine's work as a social worker. Very little political intrigue or glamour, just the hard work of helping kids and families. This story is a lovely what-came-after for the show, with a nice exploration of the complicated mother/daughter relationship between Amy and Maxine with perfect voices for each character, and a nice articulation of why people go into public service.

the hours between dawn and nothing - MASH - this is war. this is death. this is korea. (and this is how it happens after.)

I've only watched MASH a few times in my life, but this story was still amazing to me in its description of post-war life.

To Everything, Turn, Turn - Jane Austen - Persuasion - Missing moments between Anne and Captain Wentworth

Persuasion is my favorite Austen movie and book, and this story includes a number of missing moments from the story. Very nice.

Not Quite a Success Story - Say Anything - Diane and Lloyd, 15 years after the happy ending.

Say Anything is the reason John Cusack will always have a career, because so many women are still in love with Lloyd Dobler (myself included). The idea that Lloyd and Diane don't live happily after is, well. Unacceptable! This story does a good job of giving a complicated but hopeful vision of one possible future.

All the Patient States - The Office - US - "I couldn't see myself into a map, couldn't be anywhere in it."

As much as I love Jim and Pam together, I do have a special place in my heart for Toby and the Toby-Pam relationship. This story felt very true to the characters and the show itself. Lovely.
