What I think I want is a wall chimney range hood, either the one I bought at Sears on Thursday but have not actually taken delivery of yet or the somewhat cheaper model I actually meant to buy. What would be easiest to do is probably buy a generic 30-inch upper cabinet and mount the range hood to that. The existing one is an undercabinet model mounted to angle brackets, so there isn't an existing board to mount one to, although the wall is plank so it might hold one if none of the screws happened to hit a gap. I can't reuse the existing duct because it's too small, and I'd really like to move it over a little in addition to making a bigger hole, although I'd probably regret that because it's mean patching drywall in the ceiling. My impression is that the new ductwork should be done from the roof down, so I have to know where the holes go by the time the roofers get to that point (which is of course weather-dependent--it could be July). Ah, the difficulties of being a perfectionist with tastes which far exceed one's income level.
