The American Dream is different for everyone.

Recently, I've discovered that hip hop, despite what people may say about it, is actually the American Dream for inner city kids. Rap songs are about poor young people making it big. These songs, they are a chance for people to talk about their struggle to be successful, against the odds.

Some see the American Dream as a meritocratic one. In the Land of Opportunity, anyone with enough skill, intelligence, and diligence should be rewarded with membership to the elite.
And then, there are those who believe in a more democratic American Dream. Anyone should be able to succeed--and by succeed, we could mean become President, for instance--even if they didn't make it into an elite college.
Personally, I think the Founding Fathers wanted America to be a meritocracy. That's why we have a Republic, not a pure democracy.

With the exception of high school, my whole life has been, well, banal. I mean, who would consider working at watch factories and fast food restaurants if they knew they were capable of more? And, who would attend a City University school if they had the intelligence to aim for more? Let's see how far I go. No, let's see how far the American Dream goes.
