Yummy cheap food of my past

I guess it was a fluke, but one summer we lived on Top Ramen spaghetti flavor.  It never made it to the wider market, and that's a shame, cause that stuff was good.  You cooked it the regular way, three minutes in boiling water, but then drained the water and added the spaghetti sauce flavor packet.  My three brothers and I ate cases of that stuff ( Read more... )

I ate a lot of chicken or "oriental" flavor. I'd add peas, boiled egg and sometimes chopped chives on top. I also ate that Lipton noodle soup.

OMG, that sounds so good to me! But then again, I also grew up eating Slapdoodlenoodlemess (leftover hamburger helper, leftover frozen mixed vegetables, all mixed up and reheated and eaten).

at my mother's house - chef boyardee
at my house - corncakes - cornmeal with water, fried in crisco

when I ran a kitchen that served twenty odd college students four nights a week - sunday was always frozen vegetables, ground beef and a can of tomato sauce - pillsbury instant biscuits optional

I liked the teeny cakes I made in my Suzi Homemaker oven, cooked by a lightbulb and frosted from a wee packet. I was also really into high school cafeteria mashed potatoes and gravy. I guess I had a penchant for the faux in food.
