... My favorite characters: Leonard McCoy from Star Trek. He's a doctor and does not kill, he saves people lives. He's my favorite character of all time. Simon Tam from Firefly, also a doctor. Willow from Buffy has killed once, and it just about destroyed her. Mistoffelees as I have written him has killed someone once, and it was by accident in one story out of many I have written for him, excepting perhaps Star Verse but even then he was only ever in one battle scene against something other than droids. Sonya Vlask has never killed anyone as far as I know, not even in the line of duty. I'm curious what of my fanfiction you've actually been reading if you think all my characters kill. My favorites tend to be the doctors, the scientists, the actors, and such. Yes, there are plenty of warriors within my fiction, but they tend to be either guilt wracked or not the main focus. Macavity is a rather large exception to this for a few different reasons, but in many verses I've written even he does not kill. Many of my favorite novels are Victorian literature like Thomas Hardy's writing and Middlemarch by George Elliot. They don't often feature killing except in specific times and those characters are starkly punished. Some of my favorite books are the time traveling historian series by Connie Willis and I cannot think of a single character of hers that is the warrior type. Yes, there are more exceptions to this, as I do love the book of Dune, but Paul looks over his life in the second one and mourns it in pretty stark terms. Erik tends to kill, but Hank McCoy, Charles, and even Emma as far as I've ever seen do not. Scott, despite his eye sight tends not to kill either, nor does Nightcrawler. I do not like Logan very much compared to many of the other x-men, at least if he's being written as a killer, which not all writers do and I prefer it when he's wracked by guilt and fear of going too feral as you find in the 80s and some excellent stories of today. River Tam from Firefly does kill, but it's set up in such a way to be very different. I do like Zoe from Firefly as well. But seriously? "Dude, almost every one of the characters I could pick out as one of your favorite characters have killed, if not in canon than in your fanfic/RPing."? I really wonder how much of my fanfiction and rping you're read at this point to make such a statement.
"Women can be as nasty and ambitious and cruel as men, and honestly, you're going to have some characters that are like that, just as you should have some men that are sweet and soft and homemake." I do agree with this. However, I don't have to like the characters that are nasty, ambitious and cruel. I tend not to like those male characters either. Yes, sometimes we give men more of a pass, and that's not good, but I reserve the right to dislike female characters for displaying traits such as that.
You're right, art doesn't always depict the reality of male war, but honestly the ones I like are going to.
... I also wonder what you expect to achieve by questioning my education? No, I have taken no "women's studies" courses for numerous reasons. I'm interested in gender studies, not "women's studies." I have however taken quite a few philosophy courses, and read many essays on feminism and the portrayal of women, both for classes and outside of it dealing with literature and film and tv shows. I am aware of most of your arguments, but that hardly means I have to agree with them. Though taken in a slightly different way, I usually do.
Look, this conversation has taken a really bad turn for me. I'm having a pretty bad rage reactionand it's stirring some very misandrist things that I've been struggling with. Maybe after I start ProZac or something we can try this again, but as it is I am having an unhealthy reactionand I need to stop. I don't think you're being fair to female characters, but even if that's the case (not saying it is), I'm going to a bad place and have to stop.
You are basically undermining and minimizing something intrinsic to my identity, the forming of me as a person, and right now my anxiety and anger is mking it so I can' respond rationally. I apologize for cutting this short and my aggressive language, even though I stand by the heart of what I say.
